Accessibility week4. december 2014
The International Day of people with disabilities on 3 December reminds us of the many difficulties people with disabilities encounter in their daily lives because products and services are not ‘accessible’ enough. With an increasingly ageing population it is vital for industry to address the accessibility aspects of their products. Standards (PDF, 61,4 kB) can help to make sure that every person in society has equal access to products and services! They play a significant role in helping industry to meet the needs of persons with disabilities and elderly users, by providing clear guidance to product designers.
Key messages connected to the International Day of people with disabilities
- by 2050 the number of people over 65 will have increased by 183%, accessible infrastructure will help us cope
- Accessibility and usability sooner or later concerns everyone. Almost all of us will face a disability at some point in our lives.
- Lack of accessibility can make a huge impact on the lives of people to the point that many cannot work or even access health services.
- More action needs to be taken to encourage the use of standards and the introduction of legislation supporting accessibility.
